Can you identify this caterpillar please?

Can you please identify this caterpillar?  It was just walking along the path and not near any plants - any clues??

    Hi,

I'm afraid that I don't have an answer for you, but I too have seen a caterpillar much like this one except the colours are different. I saw it today (18th July 2010) whilst walking in the Dorset countryside. It got very aggressive when we tried to move it from the road. It stuck its abdomen up in the air and pointed its forked tail at us.

If I find out what it is I shall let you know.

    Cheers,

    Emma

This is the caterpillar of the Puss moth, Cerura vinula. This example is fully grown and now looking for a place to pupate - in earlier instars (stages of larval molt) they are a verdant green colour which affords them good protection when among leaves. However, this would make them a tad vulnerable when crawling about over the bark of trees or soil looking for a pupation site hence, these darker pre-pupatory colours. You see mother nature thinks of everything.
