Big Bad Catterpiller

Hi think this us a Gaudy Sphinx  but they are only American based it seems ..?.

So now very confused at this feller he is very lively any ideas would be great

    It is a caterpillar of elephant hawk moth, Deilephila elpenor


    (the caterpillar of the small elephant hawk moth is plainer)


    There are lots of them about this year, judging by the frequency of their appearance on NaturePlus.


    It does look a bit like gaudy sphinx (Eumorpha labruscae), true. But to my eye, that looks like a snake; and the elephant hawk moth looks more like an elephant's trunk (sort of).
