I found this large fly with lovely wings and a bright yellow face outside my house and I was wondering if anyone out there could ID it. It's been suggested it might be a horsefly, any thoughts would be great! Thanks.
I think it's a Volucella. Their larvae are parasites in wasp nests. See -
I agree with jaguarondi, it is a Hover fly, Volucella inanis, id from Britains Hoverflies, Bell &Morris.
