Is this a fossil?

Hi

I wonder if you could advise me regarding the attached photos, we are wondering if it is a fossil or just an odd rock, . It was found a few years ago at  Saltburn beach under the cliffs, Cleveland , uk.  It weighs approx 570 g and seems very heavy for its size so we tried a magnet against it as the area is rich in iron ore but saw no attraction.

It's very unsettling as it looks so brain like....

I hope you can help with some information or maybe point us towards someone who can help us identify it.

Kind regards

Linda

    Linda,

I think it is just a concretion.

The cracks and veins are somewhat incidental. Primarily, it is a region in the sedimentary rock where the mineralogy is slightly different (and harder), a distinction picked-out by weathering.

There are all sorts of concretions. If you are not familiar with them, this may get you started
