Incorrect Media Articles on the False Widow

It has been refreshing to see someone correctly advising on The False Widow on your forum.

But I am worried how many of the papers have been incorrectly showing images or reports of the Missing Sector Orb Weaver.

The Telegraph posted a video on You Tube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZGzYprWi74 where they add their own incorrect film footage to an interview with a London Zoo Invertebrate expert.

The Daily Mail posted this terrible photo shoot http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2465927/False-widow-spider-Mother-arachnids-infestation-petrified-toddler-risk.html with a load of poor unfortunate Missing Sector Orb Weavers in a Muller Light pot.

I am not proud that I have made the decision to destroy the False Widows I find in my own home, as they were concerning me after a few unpleasant encounters and I don't want to go dumping a False Widow outside onto another spider's door.

But I worry that the Media can be allowed to incorrectly identify the garden spiders as the 'Enemy' without correcting themselves. I feel the Telegraph's youtube interview above should especially be removed as it is misquoting a professional and people are likely to refer to it to make their own identifications. Do you think I should contact the newspaper?

Re: Incorrect Media Articles on the False Widow

    Hi,

The media do have a habit of publishing wildly over the top articles on this subject and last year was particularly bad. We do our best to correct the mis-information.

Writing to them may help but given that they have probably been informed multiple times by many different organisations and people that these articles are incorrect, the likelihood of them doing anything now is low.

    Jonathan

P.S. I updated your post to correct the Mail link - it had a spurious http:// at the start.
