Looks like a small deer, possibly a Muntjac - can you provide image/s of the feet and approximate dimensions of the animal?
Approx dimensions - 60cm long max, legs 25 - 30 cm long. Head about 15 cm to tip of snout. Sorry, should have said, it has (had) claws rather than hoofs.
In which case fox is more likely - any chance of prising the mouth open so we can see the teeth?
It looks to me to be a domestic dog the remains of its facial hair appears white, did it have a tail/brush
Hi, no tail ( skeletal or otherwise), just a "stump". I do think I am coming round to the idea that it may be a domestic dog that perhaps has gone into some trees to die ( for whatever reason). Just very strange how it got chance to mummify rather than be eaten or rot away.
No chance of prising mouth open, sorry...it took me a while to summon up the courage to move it!. From the tooth I saw sticking out, it was a top incisor measuring 0.5 cm
Well done fatcats, best left be, I often come across dead animals and still find the remains difficult, dispite no sense of smell and working back in the late 60's in a slaughter-house Give it a good burial
