Unusual and unidentified plant found in field verge. Site is 527 feet above sea level, 4 miles north of Junction 36 on M4 in South Wales - mainly open aspect woodland with open paddock which has never been cultivated, though it was pony grazed up until 4 years ago. Site (verge) unmown for 3 years and lies in shadow of adjacent, ancient, ash tree between log piles. Plant flower vertical like an orchid with long pointed leaves on opposite sides of the stem. Mainly blue when first flowers opened 3 weeks ago, now changing to mainly purple and petal tips starting to fade. Height from base to top of flower 9 inches. Stem round and fleshy. Single entity and never seen before in this location. No imported soil brought in, nor any reseeding of adjacent grass or muck spreading in past 25 years. Soil is mainly shallow loam with underlying clay on rock and fairly damp all year round.
