I found this metallic silver/grey coloured nugget on the beach whilst metal detecting. It is non magnetic and seems to me a bit too heavy for aluminium (approx 7.25g) I'm not sure if it is man-made or whether it has formed naturally? Please could someone help id it for me. I have attached four photos with a ruler underneath to show size. (around 2.5cm x 1.5cm at widest points) Many thanks!
I have no idea what this could be
How hard is it ie can you scratch it with a knife, any chance you can measure its specific gravity that entails weighing it and the weight/volume of water it displaces when dropped into water Alternatively can you file off a few grains and drop into a gas flame recording the colour
Looks man-made to me; perhaps a bronze or zinc; part of some casting perhaps.
I'll leave you to look into it with Steve.
Thanks Steve and Mike - I have just scratched it with a knife and it has left silvery marks (less grey looking than the other areas) I will try the gravity test tomorrow. Not sure about the gas flame though as I'll probably end up setting light to the kitchen!
