I found this bone on the beach at Robin Hoods Bay, can anyone identify it for me?

This bone was found on Robin Hoods Bay beach a couple of weeks ago. It is rock hard and quite heavy at 200g. It is13cm long by7cm at the widest point.

It's hollow.

  • This looks like the distal end of a femur from a young animal. In young animals the growing ends of the bones (epiphysis) are not fused to the main shaft (diaphysis), when the animal dies the growing end falls off the shaft leaving the particular four peg arrangement you can see here. The other end looks like it has a very flat surface indicating it was cut with a saw. The size suggest it is from a calf.
