A Dragonfly ...

Sorry to bother but I came across this character earlier today beside the Thames at Crossness.

Having checked all the seeming possibilities I'm left with a female Common Darter. I have a concern however a propos the black markings which seem to rule Common Darter out.

I would very much appreciate some guidance please.

Thanks very much ~ Mike .....

    Hi Mike,

My money's on Black-tailed Skimmer female - olive green eyes, abdomen tapering fairly evenly from about the front end, and the two black stripes along its length making a kind of ladder pattern.

Have a look at this for comparison:

I was briefly dragonfly spotting myself this afternoon in Essex - until the hayfever kicked in good and proper. Curses.

    Chris
