what's this?!

Saw this on a walk out today. It had the end of its tail stuck in the old log. It then un curled it and flew of. It was about 2 inches. We live in Northern Ireland incase it's relevant.

    Rhyssa persuasoria, which is a parasite of the larvae of woodwasps which live inside wood. That sort of explains the actions you mention.
