Giant Hornet..... What is it?

I have had two of these fly in my home the last couple of days, they are big - nearly 2.5" or so and make a deep drone. They are also darker than the native UK hornets I have seen in the past. I have never see hornets as big as this in the UK and was wondering a. What it is exactly is it and b. why am I seeing them now? I am slightly worried that they are nesting in the roof!

Many thanks,

Emma

Re: Giant Hornet..... What is it?

    Hi Emma,

This is our native hornet, Vespa crabro, a nice big queen looking to start a nest. Hornets don't usually nest in roofs, they most often nest in hollow tree trunks, but they do very occasionally nest in roof spaces.

    All the best,

    Gavin
