This was in a consevatory. It was quite large - at least 2 - 2.5cm but as the photo shows was not hairy all over. Can you tell me what it is please. Thank you.
This looks like a Red-tailed Bumblebee --( bombus lapidarius ).
Do red-tailed bumble bees have hairless shiny abdomens and would it have been a queen as it was quite large? J
I would say it is a Queen indeed.Bumblebees can lose their hairs over time ,either through entering some blossoms with a tight entrances ,general wear and tear or from parasites .
