Is this a friend or foe?

I have found several of these in my garden. Are they a pest, what are they?

    Hi Machin,

These are actually moth larva that build a home to travel around in until they are mature, which is pretty cool if you look at the construction closely. They are called Psyche casta in a family of moths called 'Case Bearers'. They eat dying vegitation or lichens so that could be considered good, but they will have a munch of living vegitation as well, not enough to do any noticable damage however.

    Hope this helps

Well done for doing that, they are not the most exciting moth to rear no, but its intersting and now you know more about them than most folks
