Just a grubby crabro?

Hello, everyone! I captured a very dark hornet in my house last night. To the naked eye, it looked charcoal-grey except for its head, which was yellow. In photos, patches of yellow are also visible on the abdomen when it's seen from certain angles and in strong light and there are hints of reddish brown here and there.

I decided it was a weirdly coloured or very grubby Vespa crabro rather than a velutina and released it outside. Did I do the right thing? That is, was it a native hornet? See the pix below.
