I saw an insect not far off the size of a small bird like a goldcrest, maybe 3cms.. The head and thorax were pure bee , brown , large wings but the rear half was like a large wasp yellow and with black stripes but the abdomen itself was larger then any wasp I have seen. I went back to tke a photo but couldn't find it. Can anyone give me an idea of what it is ?
Sounds like it could have been a Hornet, Vespa crabro Take a look at the pictures here and see if it looks the same...
Thanks for the reply. It is definitely not a hornet . The head was too dark and the rear was yellow with narrow black stripes. But you lead me in the right direction and I think it was a beewolf. I don't know how big they can grow or their hunting range but I was about 2/3 miles from the coast ( on Anglesey ) where there are sand dunes and there is plenty of heath-type land about.
