I found this hiding behind some pallets in my garden in Edinburgh. Only plants around were the mixed grasses and creeping buttercup that pass for my lawn. It was a lively little fella, no hairs, and about 3cm long. I didn't see any others about and put it back after I'd taken some photos.
This looks like one of the Hepialids to me, though they are a small group of moths, the larva are very similar in habitat, looks, and food plants. Most of them are common to the majority of the UK. That link to UK moths shows the adults and the NBNG information of locations.
