Is this a beetle or a bug, and any idea of the species.

This insect was observed in ancient semi-natural woodland on the 30th April 2014.  It was sitting on the leaf of Anemone nemerosa, and flew away after its photo was taken.  I initially thought it was one of the shield bugs but have been unable to identify it as such.  I have used Unwin's key to Beetles but without a clear view of its legs and tarsi, have been unable to key it with any confidence.  The elytra appear to form a shape that looks almost like a terrapin or tortoise shell.  Very strange?!

Any help gratefully received.
