Skull identification

My son and his friend found this skull under the river mud while out walking along the River Hamble in Hampshire, UK - while looking for crabs. We have looked extensively on Google to try and find a match but the closest we could come is to say it looked like a cat (although it's about twice as big as a domestic cat). Unfortunately the jaw is missing and there aren't any teeth. Here are a few pictures, hope someone can help - thanks in advance.

This looks very similar to some broken sheep skulls I've seen. The opening on the forehead also looks like someone removed the horns it (may have) had.
