Identification needed: 17th-century chameleon

Hello there,

Does anybody know what species of chameleon this might be? This specimen was acquired alive by a British collector in Algiers and it died on board ship on the voyage back to England in 1662. It was 'perfumed and stuffed' by the ship's surgeon. It's now held by Canterbury Cathedral Archives as part of the John Bargrave Collection: image here: http://www.canterbury-cathedral.org/bargrave/static_coll_cab_b43.html

I do have a higher resolution image, but it's protected by copyright so I am unable to share it here.

Many thanks!

Stephanie
