found this in my garden yesterday. never seen anything like it before. it has feet like caterpillars and has a really long pointy thing, maybe a nose? looked like there was an eye either side of the 'nose'. does anyone know what it could be?
It has all the signs of being a rat-tailed maggot. It's the larva of a drone fly, one of the hoverfly species. These larvae are aquatic and the tail is a breathing snorkel. I haven't spotted one for some time, but I remember finding them in our tiny garden pond when I was a kid. They emerge from the water to pupate in drier surroundings. Was this one found near water?
