What kind of spider?

I found this little chap whilst clearing out my garage earlier today. I took a quick photo before putting it outside and just wondered if anyone knows what it is?

I know nothing about spiders but know I've never seen one of these before. It was very timid!

Thank you for your help.

    Hi Mella,

This is a Steatoda species, most probably Steatoda grossa, AKA cupboard spider. It is one of the false widow species, but as you note, they are timid, preferring quiet, dark places. It is more widespread than the more infamous noble false widow (S. nobilis), but adult females are perhaps less often seen. It's reclusive behaviour means that it is unlikely to be a problem (neither, for that matter are S. nobilis the vast majority of the time).

It's more usual to see wandering spiderlings & males, with more distinct white markings on their smaller abdomens.

I found one in my laundry basket at the weekend. I prefer to move them out of the bedroom/bathroom, others may prefer to remove them from the house altogether, but I'm happy to leave them be in other rooms.
