Found this walking across my living room floor last night. Can someone please confirm if this is a false widow or not ? I have 2 small children in the house so if you can also confirm if there is anything precautionary I can do it would be greatly appreciated.
This is not a false widow, it is most likely a lace web spider (Amaurobius similis, or A. fenestralis) - is it wet? These spiders are usually fairly hairy, if it is smooth & shiny when dry, it could be something else?
Amaurobius spiders are very common around the exterior of our homes, sometimes finding their way indoors too (the most common spiders I see inside my own home). By some accounts they can give a painful nip, with some swelling for a couple of days, but like all British spiders they are not dangerous and bites leave no lasting symptoms. Although they have the capability to deliver a bite and sometimes show little fear of humans, being bitten is still very unlikely, unless you make a habit of handling them.
If you have any Pholcus phalangioides in the house, let these be as they love to eat bigger spiders like Amaurobius.
