Tree health - LIFE ObservaTree

I post this here so searches may find it in future.

A project has been begun to help in the early detection of tree health problems in the UK.

The LIFE ObservaTree partnership can be found here

To quote the introduction:

"Recent tree pest and disease outbreaks have raised public awareness of the threats to tree health and the need to build resilience to combat these threats.

Forest Research (FR) and the Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera) are collaborating with a range of partners to deliver a sector-wide early warning detection system for tree pests and diseases at a UK-wide scale, as part of the delivery of the Defra-FC Biosecurity and Plant Health Action Plan. As recommended by the Tree Health and Plant Biosecurity Expert Taskforce Interim Report (November 2012), the early warning system initiative is employing citizen science as an additional method of surveillance."

Note that volunteers have an important role to play.

ObservaTree collaborates with OPAL (the Open Air Laboratories) which has, since 2007, already engaged over half a million members of the public in its first six tree health surveys, concentrating on ash, oak and horse chestnut. The OPAL Tree survey buddy initiative is a good way to get involved.

It is not just about the headline pests and diseases; trees have many threats!

But at the same time, these threat organisms have their place in the ecosystem.

It is not just about blind reporting, though that has its place; it is about understanding as well.
