What kind of spider is this?

I found this spider on the floor of my dorm room (already dead, maybe I accidentally stepped on it or something?), and I have no idea what kind of spider it is...  anybody know?  The first picture is a close-up, the second one is a picture of the spider next to my thumb, for size reference.  Thanks!

    Hi Tweetie563,

It's European garden spider (Araneus diadematus), very common outdoors (external widow frames, plants & bushes) but sometimes find their way indoors too.
