quartz with galena and pyrite?

Hi (Hi Mike)

I think it might be quartz with galena?amberuuuu 038.JPG and possibly  pyrite, might be gold?

It might be gold, or something else as it is not hard material and its not sparkly like pyrite.

What you guys think

    Hi 1bear,

It could be calcite or quartz (out of the commoner possibilities). If you can scratch it with a steel knife it is calcite; if not, it is quartz.

The sparkly dark mineral: yes, I think galena's a good guess. The small grain size makes it impossible for me to see crystal faces which might confirm that or not. The softness supports the galena idea; well done for testing it.

My brother in law, John (who died not so long ago, unfortunately), and I collected some good chunks of galena in the Yorkshire Pennines many years ago. We smelted them in a little crucible to see if we could extract the lead. And we did! Thanks for reminding me of that little nugget of our past.
