Can you identify this critter for me?

Spotted this in Corfu in summer - it's always puzzled me. It is about 3 inches long and quite quick when moving....

This is the larva of one of the Soldier flies (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) and possibly the genus Stratyiomys.

These larvae are aquatic living in quite stagnant water and breath through the tube-like end which is used as a snorkel. If the ditch or stagnant pool they are living in dries out they will wriggle off in search of a new home.

As. 'maggots' go the yard very fancy .
