What spider is this?

Hope you can help I have quite a few of these spiders lingering on my window frames and wanted to know what they are, I have recently seen next to some of them little white balls that look a big like cotton wool are these nests??

Thank you

    Re: What spider is this?

    Hi there,

The spider is a harmless missing sector orb weaver (Zygiella x-notata most likely). Most homes have some, they are partial to making their homes on window frames, but will inhabit many kinds of domestic apparatus, like climbing frames, trampolines, unused bicycles, car wing mirrors...

They make little web shelters, into which they retreat, you may also see some egg sacs ("cotton wool balls"). Once the spiderlings hatch they may hang around close to mum for short while, whilst still very small, but will then disperse/die off. I have just had some hatch in my living room. They're not a problem.
