Unfortunately my cousin accidentally stepped on this beautiful Beetle. I've been attempting to identify it but nothing seems to fit right, I'm thinking part of the Scarab family but unsure.
Thanks for your help all
It looks like a May Bug and considering they are one of our biggest Beetles then it would make sense....but surely not at this time of year?
It is not quite the right shape for a maybug.
It is a great diving beetle, Dytiscus marginalis
,,,from which I quote:
"They are able fliers, and fly usually at night. They use the reflection of moonlight to locate new water sources. This location method can sometimes cause them to land on wet roads or other hard wet surfaces".
I note yours is on a road.
Once you look at some photos, you'll see the ridging on the back, the brown border and general size and shape all point in that direction. http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/gallery/showimage.php?i=44657&c=18
