Does anyone have any theories to explain why, for example, turtles can find their way back to the beach they were born on?

I find it interesting that some animals, such as turtles, have this instinct to go back to the beach they were born on and give birth there. Why is this? Why not just go to the closest beach? And chicks that are left to fend for themselves, how do they know how to catch food? Or in plants, how does the male gamete know that it has landed on the correct female plant? How come humans don't have this natural instinct? is it because we've lost touch with nature?

Any ideas, thoughts, theories etc. would be very welcome. Thanks.
