I returned home to UK from trip up the mountains in Catalonia, Spain on Saturday afternoon, on Sunday my daughter asked me to tie her hair up for her and I saw what looked like a scab on her head. I tried to pull it out of her hair but it was tough to pull away, on closer inspection I realised it was a bug!! Not only that it had a piece of her scalp in its mouth/nippers! Without thinking I'm afraid I squashed it in some kitchen roll because my daughter was so upset and scared.
I do have some close up photos though so if anyone can identify it I would be grateful. No other bugs of any kind in her hair and possibly coincidence that we'd just returned from Spain, I guess it could be just an ordinary British bug.
it looks very much like a tick, although it looks like you got it out before it became fully engorged (with your daughter's blood). It's also important that you got the head part out as they burrow in and the head part can be left in when the body is pulled and this can lead to infection.
Don't worry too much if your daughter is well, but they do carry diseases and you should make yourself aware of that. Have a look at the NHS website here http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Bites-insect/Pages/Symptoms.aspx
Yes, definitely a tick.
And it could be a European meadow tick, Dermacentor reticulatus
But I am no expert on ticks.
Thank you very much to both of you that replied to me, especially the swift response from restitution that late at night!
Although I managed to pull the tick out in tact my daughter has since suffered with swollen glands in her neck so clearly her immune system is fighting an infection in her body, but we're able to respond with treatment straight away. It was an amazing help to be able to give this information to the Dr. What a fantastic facility on this site, I'd never heard of it before now but I will be sure to rave about it!
Thanks again! :-)
I'm glad you got a good outcome and I hope your daughter recovers well. :-)
