What is your favourite bird?

Is it a peaceful dove?

Or a freaky volture?

As part of my studies I have to try and make a pie chart of the nations favourite birds

Ps. This does include penguins cos they are awesome

I love small birds because they're cuter than freaky voltures and other birds-bluetits,robins and sparrows!

Grey Wagtails are always good to see, they are a very smart bird and not uncommon. Arctic Skuas are superb, they, and Frigatebirds, define the meaing of the word 'flight'. But top of the pile are the BeeEaters.

I really like Harpy Eagles and Ospreys but Waxwings are awesome, with their vibrant colours and awesome mohican like crests on their heads. I saw a flock of 40 of them outside a shopping centre in december.

Re: What is your favourite bird?

Birds of paradise were my first thought.  My father had a set of illustrated encyclopedias and as a child I couldn't get enough of the amazing full colour pictures of these stunning birds.  In more recent years, wildlife programmes have only reinforced the impression of the exotic and startling beauty and variety of this group.

Although, for comedy and quirkiness the homely domestic fowl is something else.  Some local pet hens will usually croon "Hello" to passers by - you can almost hold a conversation with them!

Then there was a little family - a bantam cock and his two hens.  When a harmless young kitten came along He instantly belted after it, determined at all costs to protect his wives from this terrible "monster"!

When teaching I once borrowed a hen to use to illustrate the features of a bird.  This creature was not used to being handled and was very neurotic.  After flapping and squawking for a few moments she went into a "trance".  She remained catatonic for a minute or so, then suddenly came to life again before making another desperate attempt to escape which I only just managed to foil.

Chickens used to roam free around the compound where I lived abroad for a time.  Some of their goings on were like a soap opera: for example a hen playing hard to get, hiding around a corner and peeping shyly out while an amorous cockrel paced slowly towards her, clucking seductively.

These incidents were much funnier to see than to put into words but you get the idea.

I like lots of birds, but my favourites include barn owls, robins, goldfinches, bowerbirds, hoopoes, rollers, waxwings, pied wagtails, puffins, terns, gannets and many more.
