False Widow Spider

My fiancee spotted a spider in our bedroom last night and promptly  killed it, as she knew I am phobic to spiders. She took a photo of it  and is interested to know if it is the false widow spider or not. Also,  with all the press, rumours, stories and hype about this creature, how  or what is the best way to get the correct advice about this, how to  deal with it and so on? I have attached the photo for your perusal.

Thank you for all your assistance with this, I really appreciate it.

The rather broad cephalothorax (the front part of the body) makes me think it's a Tegenaria, a house spider, but can you get a better photo?

"any spider is now considered a false black widow to those that do not know the differences in spiders"

Yes, we've noticed. This forum must have received about two hundred requests for IDs in the past week or two. I'm pretty sure yours isn't a Steatoda (false widow) though.
