Just found this spider at my back door, my partner says she has seen it there for a few days and been a little worried as to what exactly it is. Can you confirm what I already believe that this is a false widow spider?
This is a species of Zygiella, probably Zygiella x-notata, and are commonly known as the Missing Sector Orb Weaver as there is a section of the web noticeably absent. These are common and widespread species and completely harmless. They do have a similar pattern to some False Widow species and are frequently mistaken for Steatoda nobilis, but as I say harmless and also useful as it feeds on insects that may be considered pests in our homes.
