Caterpillar ID please, seen at WWT Welney 29/9/2013
It is a sawfly larva.
I would say it is a species in Arge, Tenthredo or Nematus.
But I can't quite ID it.
This is close - gooseberry sawfly - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nematus_ribesii
This gives good guiance on differentiating the larvae of sawflies from moths & butterflies.
Hello Clive. I think this may be a Willow Sawfly larva. They start off this lovely green colour, then gradually change to black later. Was it on or near willows? I hope this helps.
Thanks for your help, and yes it was near Willow. Regards Clive
