My wife was walking the dog today (in Rotherham, South Yorkshire) and spotted a strange looking caterpillar type creature.
When the dog went near it, it turned into a weird fluffy ball about the size of a golf ball.
It is fascinating to see it and I just wondered a) what it is and b) if this is some kind of defence mechanism...
Thanks in advance
This is the Caterpillar of the Sycamore moth (Acronicta aceris)
As the hairs irritate the skin if it's handled then the curling action is almost certainly a defence mechanism.
Hope this helps
