Found, unfortunately, in a swimming pool in SW France.
Thanks for any ID help.
It is a hawk moth.
It could be convolvulus hawk-moth (Agrius convolvuli) or privet hawk-moth (Sphinx ligustri),
but I lean towards the former (partly based on the pale thorax).
I agree, of the 2, probably the convolvulus hawk-moth.
There was no pink barring to indicate a privet h-m.
And we do have a lot of convolvulus around here!
