I looked at the commended images for 2013, and then the winners for 2012 and wondered where the women are. Out of the ten commended images for 2013, only was taken by a woman. Of the 2012 winners, an estimated ratio of one woman's picture out of ten would possibly be overly kind. So what gives?
When I lived in Bristol I went to see a wildlife photography exhibition at the Bristol museum which I think might have been this one on tour (spring 2011?) and again, while I thought the photos were generally pretty good, I was struck and crushed by the massive under-representation of women photographers (I noticed the judging panel wasn't so under-representative).
So, what is the original ratio of women : men entrants before judging begins? Is anyone looking into this, and what is being done about it?
