What is this large caterpillar?

Large caterpillar found in our back garden in Sussex, brought indoors by one of our cats.  It is fine, no injuries, and is back in the undergrowth.  Any ideas what moth this is?  Thanks

Hello Balky. I am pretty certain that it is one of the Hawk Moths. Given that it is a rather stange browny colour, it is probably due to burrow underground and pupate. Also I see the hook on the tail is a nice blue shade. This could point to it being an Eyed Hawk Moth. Your cat is very discerning I hope this is of some help.

The coloured patch at the rear end, under the horn, says it is a Lime Hawkmoth Mimas tiliae. As Wortmaggot says, it is looking for somewhere to bury itself for pupation.
