Green biting insect - mosquito?

As I was leaving a park in Northampton a few days ago I felt a bite. On looking at my arm, I saw a small, bright green winged insect. I flicked it off quickly, so didn't get much time to look more thoroughly, or to take a photo. It looked much like a small mosquito, but lime green! The resulting bite looks and feels exactly like a mosquito bite too. Any ideas? I haven't found anything that fits the bill during my online searches.ReplyTags (edit): mosquitoes, bug, insect, biting, green, mosquito

There are several species of chironomid midge out there that are green (even bright green) that would fit the bill but, to my knowledge, none of them are biters.

Any chance of mistaken identity? The real perpetrator may have flown off before you noticed; leaving a poor innocent midge to take the rap!

My daughter, husband and I have all been bitten by little bright-green bugs.  They are slightly larger than a large greenfly.  I didn't get too good a look at mine as I squished it too quickly!  Could it be that they are after moisture like the biting ladybirds we had in 1976?  I was bitten yesterday and no sign of the bite today.  My husband was bitten today and my daughter a few days ago.
