These small grey caterpillars (c 18mm long) have appeared in large numbers in many gardens in our area - always on one specific plant. Can anyone please ID the adult of the caterpillar and also the host plant please?
They are larvae of Solomon's seal sawfly, Phymatocera aterrima.
And the plant is... ...Solomon's seal, Polygonatum sp..
I can't say which Solomon's Seal it is; it may be P. multiflorum or P. japonicum (not the variegated cultivars of it), or it could be a hybrid such as P. x hybridum.
