I was wondering if anyone could help me identify what this odd little bug is. It appeared to be completely white.
It was hard enough to photograph, let alone measure, but if I use the markings on the hob surface on another photo as a guide then my estimation would be about 3.5cm/35mm. It took off into the night shortly after this shot, though I don't fancy it's chances!
I am quite sure this is a white plume moth ( pterophorus pentadactylus )

Hope this helps
It certainly is Pterophorus pentadactylus.
I would suggest using this somewhat more authoritative site as a reference, particulaly since it describes all the related UK species: : http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?bf=1513
All Plume moths are delightful.
Thanks to you both! The photo on the page linked by Afterforty leaves no doubt at all. I've been reading up about the life-cycle of this species and it would seem like this would be a good year for them here. We've had explosive plant growth during Spring and into early Summer, and now the hot, dry conditions mean I'm surrounded by dry grassland.
