id required for this biting insect (beetle or tick?)

My wife got bitten by this bug three weeks ago.

We initially thought it was a skin growth because we couldn't shift it.  However, after a lot of twisting it came free - and then it moved and crawled away!  There were two distinctive bite marks which subsequently became infected.  Fortunately the infection seems to have cleared up.  I can't identify it  - I thought it looked like a beetle but couldn't find any that bit and held on or sucked blood.  I assume it could be a tick but again I cannot identify it.

  • It is a tick.

Despite the bite/infection clearing up, I strongly suggest you discuss the event with your GP.

Some of these ticks carry Lyme disease, the symptoms of which may be deferred. It is something you definitely want to avoid if at all possible. Your GP can adivse and I am pretty sure he/she can test for Lyme disease.
