Can anyone help me, I've been trying to identify a tree but I'm stumped! It is located in Morden in S.W London, SM4 4SJ
I've got a picture of a leaf and catkin from the tree.
It has got me perplexed, too.
The catkins don't look like Salix (sallow or willow), and the venation is wrong for Salix.
It looks more like a Populus (poplar), but then the leaves are a problem.
It is not Betula pubescens (downy birch); leaves wrong.
It is not a Corylus (hazel), Itea, Carya, or a bunch of other catkin-bearing trees.
Can you tell us a bit more about the tree, eg.:
- single-stemmed or multi-stemmed (shrub)
- bark (smooth or rough, colour)
- any other form of catkins or fruit (there could be some of last year's decomposing fruit below the tree)
One of the Mulberrys (Morus spp.) would be my punt.
