Biggest Bee I've ever seen

I managed to trap this bee between the window and screen in my house. I live in Maryland (USA). I would like to know what kind of bee this is, and how dangerous it is compared to normal honey bees. This is by far the largest bee I've ever seen (over 1.5 inches long). Thanks!

Hello there. I'm pretty sure this is Vespa crabro the European Hornet. They look a bit intimidating but are far less likely to sting you than your common Yellow Jackets. Maryland seems to have had quite a few sightings of this great wasp recently. Lewis.
