Identification of jelly filled bulb found under gourze bush

Whilst clearing gauze bushes on our shoot in North Yorkshire we found several white jelly filled balls about the size of a golf ball. They had a small root on the base but nothing on the top. When we cut one in half there was a cone in the bottom in jelly then another jelly layer and an outer skin like a puff ball. They were covered by many years of dry needles. Any thoughts on what they are?
