I found this guy curled up in the soil while i was gardening. I can't seem to find any images of it online and was just wondering what it is and might become. It is aprox 1.5"-2" long and was found next to a brown, non-hairy cater abot half the size (no idea if they have anything to do with each other).
I have added an image of the brown feller too, dont know what he is either.
I wouldn't like to guess at the 'brown feller', other then to say that they are unrelated (in the specific sense at least). The hairy guy is the Scarlet Tiger moth, which usually feeds on comfrey or nettles. It was once a reasonably scarce moth but has become more common in the south over the last 20-30 years, particularly in the Thames Valley where I live.
That’s great thanks very much! I'll get a few better shots of the brown guy for a clearer identification. It’s a shame there is no online database that’s easily accessible for this kind of thing. If I had the time I would make a start! Ah well.
