On my Canon EOS50 DSLR I had a 60mm macro lens. For the lighting of such small objects, I used a Canon Ring flash which encircles the lens . It produces great results as you can see. The only problem with it is that on reflective subjects you can see the tell tale circle of light from the flash.
I used manual settings to give a small aperture for the best depth of field with a decent shutter speed. This left the flash to deal with the exposure.
