Is this some type of wasp?

Ok  this is all getting a bit geeeky now but on the same holiday that i saw the palm weevil I also took some pics of this beastie, it was about 1 1/2" long and made me dive for cover !!

    It looks like a variety of Paper wasp or Polistes to give the proper name .

    I don't recognise this particular wasp ,strangely it looks more like the

    Polistes I've seen in America than a European variety.Not much help I'm

    afraid ,but I am pretty certain it is a wasp .

    We don't know in which continent did you found it, but I will suppose that is in the Mediterranean and then it's a Rhynchium oculatum, a very nice eumenine wasp.
