I think this is a bug of some sort - it was on the worktop in my kitchen. The closest I've come to something that looks like it is a Nettle Ground bug but it doesn't quite match the photo in my book. It was about 7-8mm long.
Can anyone id this for me please?
I don't mind you tweaking the photo - I'm grateful for any help in identifying things. I wasn't sure about it being a Nettle Ground bug because in photos that I'd found the colour round the abdomen seemed more cream/dark than the greenish/dark band on mine but in one of the photos your link took me to the colours are much more like the one I photographed so I'm going with that.
I have no idea how it got in my kitchen - there are no nettles in my garden and none that I know of particularly close by - it must have got lost!!
Thank you for your help with this.
Colours can be very deceptive when trying to ID things from photos. Apart from different colour casts on images, I'm leaning that there's often a great deal of variation in both colour and pattern within the same species, so a lot of visual ID's end up being educated guesses rather than certainties unless a creature is very distinctive. Knowing this, being unsure is a very sensible state to be in
I can recommend keeping a nettle patch in your garden. I have one which supports a big variety of butterflies and other insects. Lots of lovely subjects to photograph when the weather keeps you close to home.
Glad to have been of help,
